Creepy Halloween events in Delaware to scratch your itch for horror (2024)

Andre LamarDelaware News Journal

It's fun to get scared voluntarily during Halloween time.

Fear of missing out on cool spooky events is a bigger monster to some than playing it safe with a boringnight at home.

For horror lovers, here are creepy Delaware events that should scratch your thrill-seeking itch this Halloween season.

Legends of Lewes

Lower Slower Delaware has a paranormal party you won't want to be fashionably late to. Lewes is known for its history that involves the supernatural. Legends of Lewes is a 90-minute walking tour that ushers in unusual stories about events in town, including one of the most popular places for ghosts to hang out in Delaware: the Cannonball House.

Ryves Holt House (218 Second St., Lewes). Tours are held at 6 p.m. daily on Sundays and Wednesdays through Sunday, Oct. 29. Tours are also on every Thursday in October. Tickets are $5 children (ages 8-12) and $15 adults (age 13 or older). Visit historiclewes.org or call (302) 645-7670.

Frightland, near Middletown

Delaware’s premier haunted attraction is now in its 27th season and seeks to terrorize more casualties. The venue features several evil attractions. Frightland has a lot of prestige, having generated a buzz from media outlets such as Travel Channel, Huffington Post and Forbes.

Frightland (309 Port Penn Road, near Middletown) is open from 6 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Sundays and 6:30 to 10:45 p.m. on Saturdays. Last day of the season is Saturday, Nov. 4. General Frightpass is $40 on Friday and Sunday; $50 on Sunday. VIP pass is $80. For more info, visit frightland.com.

The Revisionist: A Haunted Victorian Walk, near Wilmington

Guests will tour Rockwood gardens for 90 minutes as they're told ghost tales by a "Revisionist," someone with the ability to connect with the undead. This means they claim to speak to apparitions, hear from them and even share what led to their deaths. Revisionists will be in character and guide lamplight tours, helping the undead back to the spirit world.

Rockwood Park & Museum (4651 Washington St. Extension, near Wilmington). Tours are held every half-hour from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Events run from Friday, Oct. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 28. Visit newcastlede.gov or call (302) 395-5555.

Biggs Museum’sspooky tour, Dover

Summer camps, hospitals and even dreams are all overrated settings for horror plots. So, what's an underrated location for spooky activity? A museum, because they attract "Scooby-Doo" vibes from paintings with roaming eyes. That's probably why the Biggs Museum of American Art invites you to a hair-raising event where you'll explore the museum galleries and discover creepy tales of "death, mourning, murder and the macabre that lie within the Biggs Collection," according to the event's description. This event is so uncomfortable that it's held during the afternoon just to make things more bearable.

Biggs Museum of American Art (406 Federal St., Dover) from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7. Free event. Visit biggsmuseum.org or call (302) 674-2111.

Rockwood Paranormal Reveal, near Wilmington

Why is Rockwood back on this list? The legends of ghosts at Rockwood are so epic that the mansion was featured on an episode of the paranormal SyFy TV show “Ghost Hunters,” which aired in 2016.

This time visitors will learn about the most recent paranormal happenings at Rockwood through activity captured in photos and video. The Rockwood Paranormal Experience Team will examine different paranormal equipment and teach guests how to become real Ghostbusters.

Rockwood Park & Museum (4651 Washington St. Extension, near Wilmington) from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 15. Tickets are $10. Visit newcastlede.gov or (302) 395-5555.

Wicked Woods, Wyoming

You know it's a red flag when a haunted attraction refers to its visitors as "victims." But you've been warned. The haunted trail always has an appetite for fresh meat. And there’s no telling what kind of weirdo creatures you’ll find here, too, so play at your own risk.

Wicked R Western (2621 Sandy Bend Road, Wyoming) from 7 to 11 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in October until Saturday, Oct. 28. Admission is $20. Facebook.com/WickedRWestern or call (302) 492-3327.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia

*Folks from the tristate love taking a trip to Philly for the historic Eastern State Penitentiary, a place that's back to scare the yell out of you with its annual Halloween Nights festival.

Aside from the crazy clowns and other disturbing characters, the scariest thing about Eastern State is it's a real prison. It was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, according to its website.

The Halloween festival features a wide array of events, from jump scares, haunted houses and themed bars to the typical fall experience of pumpkins and haybales.

Eastern State Penitentiary (2027 Fairmount Ave., Philadelphia) from Friday, Sept. 22, through Nov. 1. Visit easternstate.org or (215) 236-330.
